ONE of the largest "all abilities" playgrounds in NSW is taking shape at Lake Macquarie.

The Xstrata Coal company and Variety children's charity have been working with Lake Macquarie Council since 2006 to establish the playground at Speers Point Park.

The concept is to provide a city-scale playground, designed to include children and people with disabilities in the play environment.

The project has been separated into five stages, with the first two due to be completed in the next few weeks.

Executive officer Julie Moulton said in a report to the council that, once completed, the playground would be the largest all-abilities facility in the Hunter and Central Coast areas.
