A GROUP of 120 smart thinkers came together on Saturday in Wollongong to discuss ideas that could potentially shape Australia over future decades.

Illawarra MPs Sharon Bird and Jennie George hosted community groups, business leaders and individuals at the Illawarra 2020 Ideas Summit at the University of Wollongong.

A total of 64 submissions on topics including the economy, infrastructure, sustainability and climate change, rural Australia and health will now be forwarded to the Australia 2020 Summit to be hosted by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on April 19.

The audience on Saturday heard presentations from people behind 14 of the submissions.

"It really heartened us that people are still so willing to be positive and put forward ideas," a delighted Ms Bird said.

"For all the bad publicity we seem to have had of late, this region has some really good, smart people here."
